In response to the global ecological and social crisis, Great Work Movement Philippines (GWM) brings people together from different walks of life—homes, communities, schools, churches, workplaces and professions — and unites them around a common vision and shared values.

Thomas Berry clearly defines the vision and values of the Great Work Movement:

“ The Great Work now, as we move into a new millennium, is to carry out the transition from a period of human devastation of the Earth to a period when humans would be present to the planet in a mutually beneficial manner.”

The central theme of the Great Work is that there must be a more integral relation between humans and the rest of nature if the Earth community is to have a viable future and, importantly, if humans are to realize fully their own humanity.

Thus, bringing about the Ecozoic Era or the Ecological Age is the Great Work of our time.

GWM’s Brief History

GWM was inspired and conceived through the initiatives of the people behind the Center for Ecozoic Living and Learning or CELL. Over the past ten years, CELL, an environmental education center, has been propagating the New Story of Creation which has inspired thousands of students, professionals, communities and religious who have visited CELL, to wake up to their calling as allies, rather than as destroyers of Earth.

After many years of awareness building among thousands of visitors to CELL, it became clear that there was a need to become more pro-active in targeting change agents in society to convince them to work for the transformation of society as understood by the Great Work in their various fields. There is also a need to give inspiration to those people who are already involved in various transformative activities but are feeling isolated.

GWM is the concrete response to these urgent needs. It is a network of individuals and action groups who appreciate the wisdom of the Story, are guided by the Ecozoic vision, and act on behalf of the Earth’s agenda. It is also a resource center, offering its materials, website, training modules and facilitators to interested individuals and organizations who are eager to understand and participate in the Great Work

Since the creation of its Secretariat, GWM has been working for the formation of action groups representing the four major institutions that are key to affecting changes in society; namely: education, economics, religion, and law and government.

We at the Great Work Movement Philippines mourn the passing of one of the great minds of the 20th century. Passionist priest and acclaimed cultural historian Thomas Berry died in Well-Spring Retirement Community, Greensboro N.C, at 6:25 a.m., last June 1 2009. He was 94. Fr. Thomas Berry, described in Newsweek magazine in 1989 as "the most provocative figure among the new breed of eco-theologians," was among the first to say the earth crisis is fundamentally a spiritual crisis. Berry considered himself a cosmologist and "geologian," an Earth scholar. He was a visionary who inspired many people and organizations throughout the world with his teachings about the new cosmology. In fact, the Great Work Movement Philippines is anchored upon the rock of Thomas Berry’s teachings. Let us hope that the seeds of Berry's teachings are carried in the hearts and minds of many, many people. May the seeds of Thomas' vision and communion with the cosmos continue to blossom--for the Earth, all species, and all of us. In tribute to the Great Geologian, GWM has posted these articles, videos, audio interviews and links that focus on Thomas Berry's life and works.

The power of story telling to change the world is undeniable. We Filipinos live by stories. The stories we share create a culture of shared values and understanding. If our stories support the myth of economic growth at the expense of the lives of the common people and the health of the planet, we can never break away from the worldview and way of life that legitimize domination, poverty and environmental degradation. The key to turning the present course of human destruction of our planet and our society is to break the cultural trance and displace so called Empire stories that deny our human possibilities with compelling Earth Community stories that celebrate our creativity and capacity to build a just, sustainable and equitable society. To change our world, change our story. We encourage everyone to carry out story telling sessions in homes, schools, workplaces, churches and open spaces in our communities. We offer you our resources—story tellers, information materials and modules— that could help you in effective story telling. We invite you to submit your stories to us, so we can share them to everyone through our multiply.com site. Our multiply.com site offers resources (stories, articles, photos, videos) to interested individuals and organizations for deeper understanding of the Great Work and the emerging Ecozoic (Ecological) Society; it also facilitates linkages among change agents toward the formation of action groups. Feel free to use our resources in your own advocacy, research and organizing work.

What A Wonderful World

I see trees that are green red roses too
I watch them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world

I hear babies cry, I watch them grow
They’ll learn much more, than I’ll ever... more
